Where the Kutch desert meets the Arabian Sea — pristine beaches, the royal Vijay Vilas Palace, dramatic wind farms, and India's traditional wooden shipbuilding yard, all in one stunning coastal town.
Mandvi is a historic port town on the southern coast of Kutch — a beautiful contrast to the salt deserts inland. Once a thriving 18th-century maritime hub, Mandvi today blends royal heritage, pristine beaches, traditional shipbuilding, and modern wind farms into one unforgettable destination.
The crown jewel is Vijay Vilas Palace, built between 1920 and 1929 by Maharao Shri Khengarji III as a summer retreat for his son Yuvraj Vijayaraji. Set on 450 acres of landscaped gardens with a private 2 km beach, the palace features stunning Indo-Saracenic architecture in red sandstone — with intricate jali work, jharokhas, domes, and frescoes by artisans from Rajasthan, Bengal, and Saurashtra. After the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, the royal family of Kutch made it their permanent residence.
Mandvi Beach itself is one of the cleanest in Gujarat, offering camel rides, ATV biking, horse rides, and water sports. You can watch traditional wooden ships being built at the centuries-old Mandvi Shipbuilding Yard, visit the magnificent 72 Jinalay Jain Temple complex, and drive past dramatic wind farms lining the coast. A true coastal escape from the desert.
