The cultural heart of Kutch and gateway to every Kutchi adventure — explore royal palaces, ancient forts, vibrant handicraft markets, and centuries of living heritage. Bhuj is where every Kutch journey begins.
Bhuj is the district headquarters of Kutch and the cultural soul of the region. Founded in 1549, this historic city has long been the seat of the Jadeja royal dynasty and serves today as the gateway to all Kutch tourism — every iconic destination (White Rann, Dholavira, Mandvi, Kala Dungar) is best accessed from Bhuj.
The city's heritage is anchored by two royal palaces standing side by side in the old city: the Aina Mahal (Hall of Mirrors), an 18th-century marvel built by Rao Lakhpatji and designed by the celebrated artist Ram Singh Malam who studied in Europe for 17 years; and the Prag Mahal, a 19th-century Italian Gothic palace built by Rao Pragmalji II, featuring a 45-metre clock tower (India's second tallest). Both palaces partially survived the devastating 2001 earthquake.
Beyond the palaces, Bhuj offers Bhujia Fort (built around 1715 atop Bhujia Hill), the world-class Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum, the ancient Kutch Museum (Gujarat's oldest), Hamirsar Lake, the royal cenotaphs at Chhatardis, and bustling old-city markets selling Kutchi embroidery, handicrafts, silver jewellery, and traditional textiles.
Six unmissable experiences in the heritage capital of Kutch.
