Planning to see Dholavira from Bhuj? Here is the short answer: Dholavira is about 135–150 km from Bhuj, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way, depending on the route you take. You can do it as a long day trip, but most travellers enjoy it far more with one night near the site. This guide covers the distance, both routes, travel time, what to see at the 5,000-year-old Harappan city, the best time to go, and how to plan your trip from Bhuj.
Dholavira sits on Khadir Bet, an island in the Great Rann of Kutch, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2021. It is remote, and that is part of its magic — but it also means a little planning goes a long way.

How Far Is Dholavira from Bhuj?
Dholavira is about 135–150 km from Bhuj. The exact figure depends on which road you take. In a private car it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours one way, so a return trip on the same day means 5 to 6 hours of driving.
Bhuj is the gateway for the whole trip. Bhuj Airport, Bhuj railway station and the Bhuj bus stand are where most visitors start, and every Kutch Diaries trip to Dholavira begins with a pickup from one of them.
Two Routes from Bhuj to Dholavira
Route 1: Via Khavda and the Road to Heaven (~135 km)
This is the scenic route and the one most travellers want. From Bhuj you drive about 72 km north to Khavda (around 1.5 hours). From there the Road to Heaven — a ruler-straight road of about 30 km across the white salt flats, opened to the public in 2023 — carries you towards Dholavira in around 40 minutes.
- Why choose it: the most photographed drive in Kutch, with white salt desert on both sides in winter.
- Best timing: sunrise or sunset, when the sky turns orange and pink over the salt.
- Add-on: Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch at 462 m, is near Khavda and fits easily into the same day.
Route 2: Via Bhachau and Rapar (~150 km)
This is the classic highway route. It is a little longer but useful if you are coming from the Bhachau side or want a familiar main road. Food and fuel options thin out after Rapar, so stock up before you cross into the Khadir area.
| Route | Distance | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Khavda + Road to Heaven | ~135 km | Scenery, photos, combining with Kala Dungar |
| Bhachau–Rapar | ~150 km | The classic main-road route |

Day Trip or Overnight Stay?
Both work. The right choice depends on how much time you have and whether you want the sunset on the Rann.
Day trip from Bhuj
Leave Bhuj by 7–8 AM, reach Dholavira around mid-day, spend 3–4 hours at the site and museum, and drive back in the evening. It is a full, long day with 5–6 hours on the road. Good if you are short on time and only want the archaeological site.
Overnight near Dholavira (recommended)
Staying one night lets you explore without rushing, catch sunset in the Rann, and drive back the next morning. Places to stay near the site include Toran Tourist Complex (government-run, traditional huts), Evoke Dholavira, Heritage Resort Dholavira and a few homestays. Rooms are limited, so book early for November to February.
All our multi-day packages do exactly this: White Rann on Day 1, then Kala Dungar, the Road to Heaven and Dholavira on Day 2 with a night near Dholavira, and back to Bhuj on Day 3.
What to See at Dholavira
Dholavira was one of the five largest cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation, founded around 2650 BCE and lived in until about 1500 BCE. The site covers about 47 hectares and sits right on the Tropic of Cancer. Do not miss:
- The citadel (Upper Town): massive stone fortifications in the highest part of the city, where its rulers lived.
- The reservoirs: 16 large reservoirs with check dams and channels — an ancient water-saving system built in a region with no permanent rivers.
- The Dholavira signboard: 10 large characters in the still-undeciphered Indus script, one of the earliest signboards known.
- Middle and Lower Town: walk the planned streets and see how the city was divided.
- The Archaeological Museum: pottery, jewellery, weights and measures, copper items and bead-making tools found at the site.
- Fossil Park: fossilised wood near Dholavira, included in our package itineraries.
- Flamingos and wildlife: the wetlands around Dholavira attract flamingos; watch for wild ass and desert birds too.
Tip: hire a local guide at the entrance. The ruins are low stone walls, and a guide turns them into a city you can picture.
Best Time to Visit Dholavira
October to March is the best time — cool, dry days that are comfortable for walking around open ruins. Avoid April to September: summer heat in Kutch can be extreme, and the site has very little shade.
If you are coming for Rann Utsav (5 Nov 2026 – 4 Mar 2027), adding Dholavira via the Road to Heaven is the most rewarding way to see both the White Rann and the Harappan city in one trip.
Travel Tips for Dholavira from Bhuj
- Start early. Leave Bhuj by 7–8 AM for a day trip.
- Fuel up and carry food and water. There are no shops or petrol pumps along the Road to Heaven, and few options after Rapar on the other route.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The site is large, uneven and open.
- Carry your original photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence). Some border-area roads may require permits or ID checks.
- Keep cash for entry tickets, the museum and a guide.
- Visiting the White Rann on the same trip? You will need the White Rann permit — see our White Rann permit guide.
