About the Destination

A Royal Palace Surrounded by Gardens and the Arabian Sea

Vijay Vilas Palace is one of the most impressive heritage attractions around Mandvi in Kutch. Construction began in 1920 during the reign of Maharao Shri Khengarji III and was completed in 1929. The palace was built as a summer residence for his son and heir, Yuvraj Shri Vijayaraji, after whom it was named.

The palace is built primarily from red sandstone and incorporates elements of Rajput architecture. Its design features a prominent central dome, Bengal-style domes, domed corner bastions, carved stone jalis, jharokas, chhatris, chhajjas and colourful glass windows.

The architecture also reflects the work of craftsmen from different parts of India, including Jaipur, Rajasthan, Bengal and Saurashtra, together with local Kachchhi artisans. This combination gives Vijay Vilas Palace its distinctive architectural character.

The palace stands within extensive landscaped gardens containing water channels and marble fountains. Its upper balcony provides impressive views of the surrounding area, while the estate also contains the chhatri built in memory of Vijayaraji, who died in 1948.

The palace estate also includes a private beach. The royal family of Kutch continues to reside at the palace, which was originally used as a summer retreat. The location makes Vijay Vilas particularly attractive when combined with Mandvi Beach and the town's traditional maritime attractions.
