Sharad Baug Palace, also known as Rajavatika, is a historic royal residence in Bhuj and was the home of the last Maharao of Kutch, Madansingh, until his death in 1991. The palace was built in 1867 in an Italianate architectural style and stands within attractive gardens filled with flowering and medicinal plants.
The palace was affected by the devastating 2001 earthquake, which destroyed much of its third floor. According to Gujarat Tourism, the remaining lower floors are currently closed, while the former dining hall next to the palace houses an eclectic museum collection.
The museum collection includes objects connected with the former royal household, including two large stuffed tigers and the coffin of the last Maharao. The surrounding gardens provide a green and peaceful contrast to Bhuj's generally dry landscape and are also visited by migrating birds.
Sharad Baug is conveniently located near several major Bhuj attractions, including Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal and Kutch Museum, making it suitable for inclusion in a Bhuj heritage sightseeing route.
