Royal Chhatardi is a group of historic royal cenotaphs located approximately 20 minutes on foot southwest of Hamirsar Lake in Bhuj. The word "Chhatardi" refers to an umbrella-like canopy, reflecting the distinctive form of these memorial structures.
The Chhatardis were constructed around 1770 AD to commemorate members of the Kutch royal family. Built primarily from red stone, the structures feature polygonal forms, intricately carved roofs and decorative balconies that showcase the craftsmanship of the period.
Several of the monuments were damaged or left in ruins following earthquakes, but the memorials associated with Lakhpatji, Raydhanji II and Desalji remain comparatively intact. The site is set in an open field away from the busy city surroundings, giving it a particularly quiet atmosphere.
Royal Chhatardi is especially pleasant during the morning or evening, when the softer light highlights the stone carvings and the open surroundings are more comfortable for exploring. It can easily be combined with Hamirsar Lake, Sharad Baug Palace, Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal as part of a Bhuj heritage tour.
