About the Destination

A Royal Palace with Italian Gothic Architecture

Prag Mahal is a magnificent 19th-century palace located in the historic Darbargadh complex of Bhuj, directly next to Aina Mahal. It was commissioned by Rao Pragmalji II, and construction began in 1865 under the direction of Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins.

The palace was designed in the Italian Gothic style and brought together Italian artisans and local craftsmen. Construction was completed in 1879 at a reported cost of approximately ₹3.1 million, making Prag Mahal an extraordinary example of the architectural ambitions of the Kutch royal court during the 19th century.

Inside, visitors can explore the grand Durbar Hall, decorated with chandeliers and classical statues, along with other palace spaces and historic collections. The palace's 45-metre clock tower is one of its most recognizable features and offers panoramic views of Bhuj from the upper level.

The palace also carries visible reminders of Kutch's earthquake history, with cracks in some stone walls resulting from earthquakes over the years. Prag Mahal has also appeared in popular Indian films, including Lagaan and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
