The Oldest Museum in Gujarat

Kutch Museum is one of the most important cultural attractions in Bhuj and is officially recognised as the oldest museum in Gujarat. It was founded in 1877 by Maharao Khengarji to showcase the diverse crafts, traditions and everyday life of the Kutch region.

The museum contains a wide-ranging collection covering textiles, weapons, silverware, sculpture, paintings, musical instruments, embroidery, precious metalwork, wildlife and other objects connected with Kutch's cultural heritage.

One of the museum's most significant collections consists of Kshatrapa inscriptions dating back to the 1st century AD. The museum also preserves examples of the extinct Kachchhi script and displays coins, including the kori, the traditional currency of Kutch.

A dedicated section focuses on the tribal cultures of Kutch, with examples of traditional artefacts, folk arts and crafts and information about the region's communities. This makes the museum an excellent introduction to the cultural diversity visitors will encounter while travelling across Kutch.

Its location opposite Hamirsar Lake also makes it easy to combine a museum visit with Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, Royal Chhatardi and other heritage attractions in Bhuj.
