Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is a vast protected landscape in the Great Rann of Kutch, known for its seasonal saline wetlands, flamingos, migratory birds, desert wildlife, fossils and the famous Flamingo City. It also encompasses Khadir Bet, home to the ancient Harappan city of Dholavira.
Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most remarkable natural landscapes of Kutch. Located in the Great Rann, the sanctuary covers a vast seasonal saline wetland that changes dramatically with the seasons. After the monsoon, water occupies parts of the Rann, while by October and November much of the area dries into a vast saline desert.
The sanctuary is particularly famous for its birdlife. Thousands of flamingos visit the region, and the famous Flamingo City in the mudflats of the Rann is an important breeding area for flamingos. The sanctuary also supports numerous resident and migratory birds.
The landscape is not limited to birds. Visitors may encounter animals such as chinkara, fox, hyena and nilgai, while Gujarat Tourism also notes occasional sightings of caracal. The sanctuary's open saline landscape creates a completely different wildlife experience from the forests found elsewhere in Gujarat.
Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is also important from a geological and palaeontological perspective. Rocks around Khadir, Kuvar and Pachchham Bets contain fossils of plants and animals, including records of dinosaurs, crocodiles, whales, ammonites and other prehistoric life.
Another major attraction within the sanctuary is Dholavira, the remarkable Harappan archaeological site on Khadir Bet. The district administration confirms that Dholavira is located within the Kachchh Desert Wildlife Sanctuary in the Great Rann of Kachchh.
For travellers, the sanctuary is best understood as a large natural region rather than a single sightseeing point. A visit can be combined with Dholavira, Khadir Bet and other attractions of the Great Rann, depending on access permissions and the route being followed.
