About the Destination

A Fort with More Than a Thousand Years of History

Kanthkot Fort is one of the oldest historical landmarks of Kutch, standing on an isolated rocky hill near Kanthkot village in the Vagad region. The Kachchh District Administration traces the fort's origins to the 8th century AD and notes that it was associated with the Kathis, a Sun-worshipping tribe.

Over the centuries, Kanthkot passed through the hands of several ruling dynasties and played an important role in the political history of Kutch and Gujarat. Historical records associate the fort with the Chavdas, Solankis, Vaghelas and later the Jadejas. It was also an important refuge during periods of conflict, including the time of Bhimdev I and the campaigns associated with Mahmud Ghazni.

The fort today is largely in ruins, but its location and surviving structures give visitors a glimpse into its remarkable past. Around the hill are the remains of ancient religious structures, including a Jain temple, a Sun temple and the shrine of Kanthadnath. Old wells and a ruined stepwell also remain near the fort, adding to the site's historical character.
