Hamirsar Lake is one of the most important historic landmarks in Bhuj and has played a major role in the city's development for centuries. The approximately 450-year-old man-made lake was developed during the reign of Rao Khengarji I and was named after his father, Rao Hamir.
More than just a lake, Hamirsar was at the centre of an impressive traditional water-management system designed to supply Bhuj with water. Canals and channels brought water towards the lake, while a wider network of reservoirs and wells helped support the city's water needs.
Today, the lake provides a peaceful escape in the middle of Bhuj. Visitors can walk along its edge, enjoy the views and experience the local atmosphere. During the cooler months, the lake and surrounding area can also attract migratory birds.
