Dhrang is a significant spiritual destination in Kutch associated with Sant Mekan Dada, a revered saint remembered for his humanitarian service in the Rann of Kutch. According to the Kachchh District Administration, Mekan Dada was born in Vikram Samvat 1720 and spent much of his life travelling across the desert.
Mekan Dada dedicated his life to helping people who became lost or stranded in the harsh desert. His famous companions were Laliyo, a donkey, and Motiyo, a dog. Laliyo carried food and water, while Motiyo helped guide the donkey towards travellers in need. Together, they helped provide food, water, shelter and direction to people crossing the Rann.
In the later part of his life, Mekan Dada settled at Dhrang, where his memory continues to be honoured. He was also known as a poet who composed hymns based on Hindu philosophy. Today, Dhrang attracts devotees and visitors interested in the saint's life, humanitarian work and the cultural traditions of Kutch.
Dhrang is particularly lively during its annual fair. The Kachchh District Administration lists the Dhrang Mela among the fairs worth exploring in northern Kutch.
