Aina Mahal is one of Bhuj's most remarkable royal landmarks, famous for its elaborate mirror work, European-inspired interiors and exquisite craftsmanship. Built for Maharao Lakhpatji in the 18th century, the palace now houses a museum showcasing the royal heritage of Kutch.
Aina Mahal, meaning "Palace of Mirrors", is one of the most famous heritage attractions in Bhuj. The palace was commissioned by Maharao Lakhpatji in the 18th century and was designed by Ram Singh Malam, an architect and craftsman who had learned European techniques during his travels.
The palace is renowned for its extraordinary interiors, where white marble walls are decorated with mirrors and gilded ornamentation. European influences can be seen throughout the palace, including blue-and-white Delft-style tiles, Venetian glass chandeliers and other decorative elements.
Aina Mahal was damaged during the devastating 2001 Gujarat earthquake, but the surviving portion was restored and continues to house a museum. The museum contains royal possessions, paintings, weapons, jewellery, embroidery and other objects connected with the history of Kutch. One of its notable exhibits is a 15.2-metre-long scroll depicting a royal procession of the Kutch state.
The palace is located within the historic walled area of Bhuj, next to Prag Mahal. Its central location also makes it easy to combine with Kutch Museum, Hamirsar Lake, Royal Chhatardi and other Bhuj heritage attractions.
